Who needs Republicans with the Democrats pushing austerity for working people at every level, from the President Obama to Governor Cuomo to Mayor Miner? With Democrats holding every elected office in the city and with the incumbents who questioned some of the Mayor’s austerity policies replaced by Yes People as candidates by the City Democratic Committee on May 4, the Green Party Convention needs to designate some candidates who can win in November and lead the fightback against austerity.

If the rich paid the tax rates and the state shared the revenues that they did in the 1970s, the unfunded mandates would be funded, the city fiscal crisis would end, there would be no Financial Control Board in the city’s future, and the city would have the revenues it needs to meet its obligations. The city could rehire teachers, restore the Fire Department, re-open the Ida Benderson Senior Center, expand the coverage of the Living Wage law, and employ our unemployed in housing rehab, clean energy, universal pre-K, expanded mass transit and bike and pedestrian infrastructure, youth programs sufficient to the need, and more.

Only the Green Party is willing to take on the wealthy special interests who fund the two corporate parties in order to get mass austerity for us and tax breaks for them. The bosses have two parties. It’s time we had one of our own. It’s time to start electing our own representatives to office.

As a political party we work to establish political action based on cooperation, rather than exploitation, on conservation rather than consumption, and on sustainability rather than short-term gain. We believe in an alternative, independent politics.
